Bit disappointed
I was looking forward to this but was a bit disappointed. It was funny for the first 15 mins and then I think a bit predictable. I now think improvisation is better for short sketches rather than a whole show. One of the actresses also laughed the whole time - it was funnier when they kept straight faces as they said their lines. Not sure it was worth the money .
Disappointed with Austentatious
I went with my wife to see “Austentatious: An Improvised Jane Austen Novel” at the King’s Theatre in Glasgow on Saturday evening 27th June 2026. The performance was underwhelming. The cast asked for suggestions for an improvised performance, but it was clear that they had a 'plant' in the audience to suggest 'Darcy's Angels' as the theme; it was immediately accepted. There appeared to be more preparation than spontaneous improvisation, but no engaging plot subsequently emerged. References to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Richard Nixon were far removed from the themes of Jane Austen’s novels. The concepts of the play were stereotyped and vulgar. The play made heavy reference to ‘toxic masculinity’ and ‘internalised mysogyny’, including ‘involuntary celibates’ and ‘Andrew Tate’. Perhaps some references to Geoffrey Chaucer’s ‘The Canterbury Tales’ would have been more appropriate, but this cultural level was not reached in the play. Not to be recommended.
